Sign up Today for Audubon's Florida Climate Action Network

By Pete Johnson, Climate Change Organizer, Audubon of Florida

Hi, my name is Pete Johnson and for nine years I've been an active member of the Duval Audubon Society in Jacksonville, Florida. I also serve my chapter as a Director and Climate Change Solutions Chair. In addition, I lead fieldtrips, help organize programs, pitch in wherever I can, and love every minute of it (well almost)! With all of this on my plate, family and working for a living, it's really hard to find the time for making my voice heard by decision makers on big issues like climate change.

The Florida Climate Action Network is an expanding group of more than 1,500 local Audubon chapter members and concerned Floridians. We receive periodic Climate Solutions E-Newsletters provided by Audubon of Florida policy experts. The goal of our network is to give concerned Floridians like you and me opportunities to act in favor of urgently needed solutions to the climate crisis. We have the solutions. What we need is a groundswell of support to implement them.

Together, we can build and harness our collective power to make a difference. National cap and trade legislation, strong state policy incentives for energy efficiency and renewable energy in Florida, and local actions to reduce global warming pollution will launch us on the right path to avoid the worst impacts of global warming.

Some of our elected and appointed leaders like Governor Charlie Crist, Senator Bill Nelson and many others from both political parties are already starting to lead us in the right direction. They need all the help and support they can get from us to tip the political and special interest scale of resistance to support. They need public support for passing strong federal and state laws aimed at reducing green house gas emissions, promoting energy efficiency, and clean, renewable energy production like solar, all of which will create hundreds of thousands of new jobs and stimulate our ailing economy.

By signing up for the Climate Action Network with your name, email and zip code, you will receive periodic (not weekly or even every month) Climate Solutions E-newsletters when important actions are necessary. For example newsletters were sent out just prior to important carbon cap and trade legislation coming up for a vote in late 2007, and again in August 2008 when politicians needed to hear about better energy solutions than the big push for more oil drilling off our coasts and in the Artic National Wildlife Refuge.

Please go to www.audubonofflorida.org and sign up today by clicking on the link at the bottom of the main page. By signing up for the Climate Action Network, you will also join the Alliance for Climate Protection -- WE Can Solve the Climate Crisis Campaign. They are a globally recognized partner of the National Audubon Society and help to support our Florida Climate Action Network.

Please feel free to contact me anytime with any questions or comments about the Florida Climate Action Network. My contact information is on the Duval Audubon Society website (www.duvalaudubon.org). You may also contact Traci Romine, who works on policy and communications, at TROMINE@audubon.org. She can help you with climate and energy related matters and Jacqui Sulek, our marvelous Chapter Coordinator, at JSULEK@audubon.org.
