Port Commissioners Approve Avocet Lagoon Viewing Platform

By Jim Meyer

On September 17, the Port Commissioners approved the Viewing Platform which will be constructed on Port Authority property at the West end of Avocet Lagoon. Jason Frederick, SCAS President, supported the meeting and answered questions which were posed by the Commissioners. This significant approval followed a meeting last Spring that Jason and myself proposed this siting due to an enpass with the Corp of Engineers for construction at the Canaveral Lock. Preliminary approval by the Department of Environmental Protection and Corp of Engineers for Wetlands has also been received. Bob Musser, our Port Authority contact, has indicated he expects to have everthing in about 2-3 months, including an agreement with SCAS which would allow construction to begin.

However, all is not well! Space Coast Truss who had agreed to supply lumber has gone out of the lumber business. My contact at Space Coast Truss has forwarded the List of materials to the his former salesman who is working for another lumber company. Also, the Port Authority wants to upgrade the Platform for Coastal wind category D. I've contacted the Architect for the drawings of the Viewing Platform and he indicated he could upgrade the design to meet the Port Authority requirements. I'm still in the process of contacting several other key players to make sure they're still able to support the Project. A few obvious wrinkles but I'm hoping things will fall in place so SCAS can provide this Project for the use of everyone wanting to view the wonderful wildlife in Avocet Lagoon.
