Eighth Annual Patrick Smith Day at Forever Florida, November 17
Sponsored by the Allen Broussard Conservancy, a 501(C)3 Not-For-Profit Corporation
Note from Margaret Broussard: Allen Broussard got his start in conservation through SCAS (back then known as Indian River Audubon), with Ned Steele!
The public is invited to a special day honoring acclaimed Florida author Patrick D. Smith, voted "Greatest Living Floridian" by the Florida Historical Society. A three-time Pulitzer Prize and six-time Nobel Prize for Literature nominee, Smith's lifetime work as a writer has earned him top prizes from many organizations, among them the National Society of Daughters of the American Revolution and the Florida Historical Society. Smith’s best known novel, A Land Remembered, was recently voted Best Florida Book for the eighth year by readers of Florida Monthly Magazine. Much of A Land Remembered is set in the 1800s in Florida’s prairies and scrub brush, which has been preserved in its natural state at Forever Florida.
Patrick Smith plans to be in the Visitor Center to sign his nine books: The River is Home, The Beginning, Forever Island, Angel City, Allapattah, The Last Ride, In Search of the Russian Bear, The Seas That Mourn and A Land Remembered. The keynote address, "How to Conserve Wildlife: The Allen Broussard Legacy," will be by Dr. Rob Deblinger, Deputy Director, Massachusetts Division of Fisheries & Wildlife. Nature photography fans will enjoy a unique opportunity to photograph natural Florida on An Early Riser Photography Tour from 7AM -9AM. Cost is $40.00 per person and includes breakfast and admission to Patrick Smith Day. Additional entertainment includes Cajun music by Allen’s Cajun cousin Alan Broussard and friends, Cajun stories, an interactive Kid Zone, games, activities and a Cracker oxen demo. Dr. Sandra Wise will hold a cracker horse training demonstration. Local artisans will display their wares.
Following the entertainment, a special 2-hour Eco-Safari tour of Forever Florida and the Crescent J Ranch will be offered for $19.95. Admission is $5.00 per person or $10.00 per car. Lunch includes Gumbo & Crawfish or BarBQ for $10.00. FOREVER FLORIDA is in East Osceola Co., 7.5 miles south of Holopaw on US 441.
