Where Are the Field Trips Taking Us and Why?

By Jason Frederick

Florida is, in my opinion, is one of the greatest places, if not the best, to be when it comes to bird watching. Being a stop on the Atlantic Flyway for migratory birds, we have more opportunities to see more birds than most other states. When we get “bored” with what is here, new birds arrive and those that were here, head out.

So where are the field trips headed this month and what should we see? In early September, we still have migratory shorebirds heading thru. Towards the end of the month, those hard to identify warblers start making their way down.

Where is a good place to see them? For shorebirds like, we will be hitting Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge, Jetty Park and Viera Wetlands. These are great places to see sandpipers, plovers, egrets, herons, gulls, terns, and more. And for warblers and their other small friends, Lori Wilson, Turkey Creek and Tosahatchee are the best bet. If you want to see warblers, vireos, woodpeckers, cardinals, and so much more, these locations are the best. There is no telling what we will run into.

Remember, field trips are free (unless there is an admittance fee) and open to the public. You do not have to be a member of Audubon to attend, so bring a friend. Bring fluids and a snack as needed. Don’t forget to wear sun screen and insect repellent. Wear comfortable shoes and clothing.
