President's Message
By Sarah Linney
Rolling fresh off the 2007 Audubon Assembly: Saving Birds and Special Places, Betty McKeown and I are reinvigorated with fresh ideas and stuff to talk about. That is after I get over my second cold and we both catch up on some sle...zzzz.
At lunch on Friday, I was quite delighted and surprised to be recognized along with Peggy Cox of Orange Audubon, for putting the field trips together for the Assembly. To the envy of all I think, we both received gorgeous gifts of bromeliad "sculptures" donated by Driftwood Gardens, Inc. They also provided the table centerpieces, both large and small, which were available at the end of the event for a modest donation. Not a one went unclaimed.
The Friday evening awards dinner was especially rewarding as two of the outstanding leaders in our county received top awards from Audubon of Florida for the work they have done and continue to do for our community and the environment. Jim Swann was recognized with the Audubon of Florida's Teddy Roosevelt Award which recognizes public leadership on behalf of land and water conservation. Laurilee Thompson was recognized with the Guy Bradley Award for being a Courageous Advocate for Florida's Wildlife Heritage. More on both of these awards will follow in next month's Limpkin.
In the spring of 2007, our chapter can look forward to a special kayaking field trip through the Thousand Islands area with Space Coast Kayaking and local guide Jim Durocher. Jim had a trip for the silent auction for which I won the bid (sorry Jim Meyer) and we agreed to invite the rest of the chapter along for a discounted rate, so more details to come on this around March.
It was great seeing old friends and making some new ones and getting a shot in the arm of inspiration that I hope Betty and I can pass along to rest of you. Thanks to all the field trip leaders from the chapter: Jim Meyer, Jason Frederick, David Simpson, Jim Stahl, and Betty McKeown, and thanks to Holiday Inn Cocoa Beach Oceanfront Resort for hosting the Audubon Assembly this year.
Thank you also to Jim Meyer and Jason for leading the General Meeting in my absence Friday night. Hope to see folks on upcoming field trips and other events. Happy Halloween and Thanksgiving! |
