St. Johns River Alliance Fundraiser
By Sue Carlson
The St. Johns River Alliance (SJRA) is a non-profit 501c3 organization representing diverse interests throughout the 310 mile region the river traverses from Indian River County to Jacksonville. We used to be the American Heritage River Steering Committee, but recently incorporated and hired an Executive Director. We have a 26 member Board of Directors made up of numerous county commissioners, Mayor of Jacksonville, regional planning council representatives, DEP and others. I am the current Chairperson. The St. John Water Management District has actively supported our efforts to bring awareness to the river from a community based perspective with their in-kind and financial support. We hope to provide a conduit to local, state and federal officials for concerns and interests of those who use the river in all capacities. Through education and legislative leadership we hope to promote and preserve this historical river and it's many assets.
The river is divided into 3 watershed basins. Brevard County is in the Upper Basin. Each basin has a community advisory committee and technical advisory committee (CAC/TAC). The Alliance is working on a series of Zoo fundraisers to raise awareness about the St. Johns river. The Upper Basins fundraising event at the Brevard Zoo will be December 3rd, 4-7 p.m. in the Education area. Our PBS Film on the St. Johns will be debuting. For more details on any of the above feel free to contact me at my office 633-2044 or by cell at 427-1508.
We look forward to your participation on some level. Thanks. |
