President’s Note

By Sarah Linney, SCAS President

The holidays are all past, as are the Christmas Bird Counts. Back to the regular grind. I hope everyone’s feasts, trips and family visits went without a hitch. The holidays can be a great break from the usual day-in and day-out routine; but it’s almost nice to get back to the relative calmness of work after all the hustle and bustle.

It’s a brand new year, and I am excited about beginning new Chapter projects. Jason is working hard on initiating our own Project Colony Watch for wading bird roosts and nesting colonies in the county. This will be an ongoing project and a cooperative undertaking as we will be needing volunteers to help monitor the roosts. We also hope to launch another Poster Contest in conjunction with donating an educational birding video by Dr. Merritt to the Media Centers of Brevard’s Elementary Schools. And wouldn’t it be great to have the final meeting at a different locale and invite more folks to share in the fun of the potluck and auction (besides giving our members a break from having to set up tables and chairs)? We are currently looking into a great location not all that far from the church. Shhh...I don’t want to spill the beans yet, so it will have to be a secret for now.

A very special thanks to everyone who participated in any of the bird counts and especially to the local coordinators: Judy Dryja and Dan Click for MINWR, Nedra Sekera and Dick Novier for Cocoa, and Roy Book and Jack Taylor for South Brevard. I also want to thank all the wonderful people who coordinated the potluck and those that brought dishes for the hungry birders after the Cocoa count. Great job everyone!

See you on the birding trail!
