How Vote for environmental bonds

This November, you will have a chance to preserve Brevard by voting to buy environmentally endangered lands that preserve green space, protect our drinking water, enhance natural areas such as the Indian River Lagoon, and protect Brevard from Miami-style over development.

Rapid growth and development are occurring throughout our country. Let’s keep Brevard beautiful by forever preserving those natural areas that are essential to our quality of life. Brevard’s Environmentally Endangered Lands (EEL) Program has wide public support because citizen scientists oversee the process, preserving areas such as the Archie Carr Sea Turtle Refuge, the Enchanted Forest, Maritime Hammock, Pine Island, and Turkey Creek.

The existing EEL Program cannot afford to meet critical conservation goals. With funds from a new bond referendum, additional lands can be preserved to protect vital water recharge areas and Indian River Lagoon water quality. We can do this without paying any more in taxes; the new bond referendum will use the same tax that is currently being collected for the Beach and Riverfront Program, which is ending next year. The cost is about $17 for the average homeowner ($17.27, based on a medium assessed home value of $107,850, millage rate of .2085, and homestead exemption of $25,000).

If undeveloped natural areas and water are important to you, vote for bonds on November 2. We may never get another chance.
