On December 12, IRAS Will Have Bats in Our Belfry!

By Dee Fairbanks

IRAS is pleased to welcome Fly By Night to our December 12 meeting. Fly By Night is a small non-profit organization that is dedicated to bat conservation. The program will be a 45 minute slide show explaining what Fly By Night does, which includes research, exclusions, and helping people install bat houses. They will also talk about the bats that you can see in the south eastern U.S., along with all sorts of bat facts. They will also bring a few very special guests: a native Floridian bat, and a Straw-colored Flying Fox (native to Africa). And finally, at the end of the meeting, we will go out side to look for bats with a bat detector that picks up the high frequency echolocation calls of the bats as they fly, searching for food.

As vice president and program director of Indian River Audubon, I always encourage people to come to our meetings every month, and of course, I always mean it. However, I must admit that I am particularly excited about this months meeting, as this is one of my personal favorite topics. In fact, I had the opportunity to go on a bat walk with a bat detector a few months ago in St. Pete, and it was a blast! I sincerely hope to you see you there, and don’t forget to bring the kids. This is sure to be a very fun and interesting meeting.
