Volunteering is Fun!

By Robert Kreidler

Are you looking for a new opportunity to serve as a volunteer at a very exciting birding location in Brevard County? Bob, Luba, and Karl Kreidler (age 96) have been volunteering at the Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge (MINWR) for nearly two years. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service could not accomplish its many projects without the assistance of volunteers.

There are a variety of volunteer opportunities at MINWR and over 600,000 visitors pass through the visitors center each year. Most of these visitors arrive at the same time as the migratory birds for which the refuge was established. Refuge volunteers staff the visitors information center, orienting visitors and answering questions. The refuge also provides interpretive nature programs from November through March, utilizing volunteer naturalists. Other volunteer opportunities include trail maintenance, assisting with wildlife surveys and research projects, be-ginning birders tour guides, refuge rovers, litter details, and many other opportunities. All refuge volunteers are pro-vided with training needed for the job, usually being paired up with refuge staff and other experienced volunteers. Over 330 species of birds can be seen at MINWR.

If you would like to join the Kreidlers and other volunteers for some exciting times in your life, call Bob Kreidler (459-3806) or Nancy Corona, Refuge Ranger (861-0668) to find out about a volunteer opportunity for you. You will see how volunteering can make the difference in your life, and the fun you will have as an MINWR volunteer.
