Author Deborah Green’s Message to IRAS

By Tom Atkinson

Those who attended the January general meeting were treated to a slide presentation of exceptional depth and quality. Speaking to our group was Deborah Green, Ph.D., on the subject of the flora and fauna of the Canaveral National Seashore, Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge and the Indian River Lagoon.

You would think that our chapter would be pretty well versed on the things growing, crawling, swimming, and flying around in our back yards, but Dr. Green handled the details of these plants and critters in such a comprehensive manner that they sounded fresh and exciting. Her presentation made me want to get out doors more, and be more observant when I get there. It was a delight meeting her and having her share with us her dedication and skill in matters natural and her underlying desire to preserve these natural resources for future generations.

Dr. Green brought along a few copies of her most recent book for purchase. The book, Paradise Preserved, Natural History Explorations—Canaveral National Seashore & Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge, is published by Sabal Press, Longwood, FL 32791, and was made available to IRAS members for a special price of $7.

As Dr. Green says in her book, “The purpose of this book is to make you aware of the complexity and beauty of the natural ecosystems within the CNSS and MINWR. With increased knowledge of these natural habitats and their plant and animal inhabitants, you will better understand the need to conserve and maintain natural areas.” What could be closer to our purpose for being than that?
