2002 Audubon Adventures
By
Barb Venuto
Our chapter’s goal is to educate. Every year our members
and generous donators support National Audubon’s program of
Audubon Adventures providing 70 to 95 classrooms, grades 3 through
5, with classroom kits on four various topics. Teachers have raved
about these kits, however there has also been some discussion on
value.
As
teachers are stressed to teach a required curriculum and to prepare
for standardized testing, sometimes it is difficult to fit these
topics in. The kits come late in the school year, whereby teachers
are too busy to use then and must wait until the following year
if they are teaching that grade level. We received requests from
26 schools last year. There are over 90 schools in Brevard County.
This year, we decided to try a new education program. Each elementary
school in Brevard County will receive a set of books from the Florida
Fabulous series Birds and Waterbirds by W. Williams. These books
will be purchased from the Merritt Island Wildlife Refuge gift shop
at cost. A poster contest for grades 2 through 4 with the theme,
“My Favorite Florida Bird is...” will also be ongoing.
Your support for this project will be greatly appreciated. We need
donations of $15 for each school for the set of books. We also need
donated prizes for the poster contest.
We would like to thank Carroll Holland and Julie Seberry for their
work in classrooms as they teach beginning birding. Having bins
with binoculars and guides, they make a 90-minute presentation in
the classroom including a walk outside to bird watch. If anyone
is interested in having a program in their classroom, please call
Julie (452-3738) or Carroll (452-1509). If you have any other comments
or suggestions, or if you would like to join the education committee,
please call Barb (452-3609).
