Space Coast Audubon Society 2022-2023 Season
Members and Guests of our chapter: Spring is here, migration is well underway and our year is winding down .At a recent meeting of our board of directors, we decided to eliminate the Covid restrictions that have been in place for some time. Most Florida Audubon chapters have done the same. All individuals can still follow their Covid protocols if they so desire.
General meetings are the third Friday of each month from September to May at the Rockledge Presbyterian Church. You must still sign up for field trips and learning events on Meetup, so we don't overwhelm the leaders. Rob Lane is now our field trip chairman. Details of all meetings and events are available on our website.
The Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge, unlike some past winters, had a very good season in terms of its avian visitors. There were huge numbers of wading birds, good numbers of waterfowl and shorebirds and the American coots were back in abundance. The Orlando Wetlands recently opened a half mile long boardwalk over open water that passes by a large island rookery. It is well worth a visit. Their new visitor center is scheduled to open in the fall. Work is progressing on the the replacement boardwalk in the Mansfield Hammock at Lori Wilson Park. It is partially open now. It is best to check on our many birding sites before you visit as open times and policies can change.
It has been my honor and privilege to have served as your president the last four years. We had many challenges during the pandemic, but managed to have an excellent series of meetings and events - some in-person and some virtual. Bill Fisk is taking over as president next year. The other officers remain the same.
